My Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award Journey

Taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. It challenged me both physically and mentally, while also teaching me valuable skills such as teamwork, independence, and resilience.

Before the expedition, we spent several lessons preparing for the journey ahead. We were given large backpacks and practised packing all the equipment we would need for camping, including tent parts, cooking supplies, food, and personal items. We worked together in our groups to decide who would carry each piece of equipment. Responsibilities were shared fairly, and only one person in each group was allowed to carry the emergency phone. These preparation sessions helped us understand the importance of organisation, survival skills, and working independently. We also took our backpacks home to get used to carrying the weight before the expedition began.

The adventure officially started on Day 1 when we set off from school and began our walk to Crabbe Shooting Range. The route was long and demanding, but we remained positive and motivated throughout. We stopped regularly for short breaks to eat, drink, and regain our energy. One of the most important parts of the journey was teamwork. Whenever someone found the walk difficult or started to fall behind, the rest of the group offered support and encouragement. This helped us stay together and continue as a team.

After reaching Crabbe Shooting Range, all the groups gathered at the campsite and began setting up their tents. Although we were organised into larger groups, we worked in pairs to pitch the tents. Once our campsite was ready, we cooked our own dinner and settled in for the evening. It was a great feeling to relax after a long day of walking and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Sitting with friends, sharing stories, and appreciating the peaceful environment made the experience even more memorable.

On Day 2, we woke up early, prepared breakfast, and packed away all our equipment. After making sure the campsite was clean and tidy, we continued our expedition from Crabbe to St Aubin’s Car Park. Along the way, we passed several interesting locations, including the Elephant Park. Although our legs were tired from the previous day’s walk, we stayed focused and kept encouraging one another to reach the finish.

When we finally arrived at St Aubin’s Car Park, our group had completed the route successfully and finished ahead of the others. I felt incredibly proud of what we had achieved together. Completing the expedition earned me my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and certificate, which was a moment of great accomplishment.

Looking back, the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award was an unforgettable experience. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, helped me become more independent, and showed me the importance of teamwork and determination. Most importantly, it created lasting memories with my friends, who were supportive and encouraging throughout the entire journey. It is an achievement that I am extremely proud of and one that I will remember for many years to come.
