Plastic Recycling
In our school we have a plastic recycling system in our canteen. There are 4 recycling bins, all with a different colour, allocated to our respective houses which is displayed on the front of these plastic recycling bins. Our houses are Kempt (Yellow), Rocco (Green), Fliquet (Red) and Seymour (Blue). The bins are for plastic bottles. If you have an empty bottle, you take it to the canteen and put it in your House bin, and at the end of the term, each House’s bags of bottles are counted and we get House points. The House with the most bottles gets the most House points and the House with the least bottles gets the least House points. Recycling is really helpful to the environment as it conserves energy, reduces pollution, and prevents hundreds of years of landfill waste. Plastic bottles can be recycled into products such as clothing, carpets, and new containers. Recycling one ton of plastic saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. We also recycle paper at school.
Old Glasses/Spectacles
If you have an old pair of eyewear, or a broken pair that is just laying around and not being used, you can bring it into school and give them to the Reception office and tell your Form Teacher. The Form Teachers should be keeping a tally of how many pairs they have received. The class that collects the most will receive a box of chocolates.
Some of our eco warriors voluntarily use litter pickers located in Mrs Barnard’s room to collect litter every Thursday and Friday break time. We earn House points for volunteering.
Book Swop
We will also be holding a book swap where you can bring in old books that you no longer enjoy or don’t want and choose a new book instead. You never know, somebody could love the book that you used to! All books must please be in good condition, without rips, tears or drawings. All books must be appropriate and with no swear words or adult topics, these books should be suitable for children as young as 11, as year 7s will also be taking part. If your book is aimed at older children, and you think maybe a Year 11 or 10 would enjoy it, make sure to let Mrs Barnard know, so she can make a note of which books are unsuitable for younger aged children.
Jacket Swap
Another event being held is a jacket swap. This is very much the same as the eyewear swap and book swap. If you have a jacket in good condition, without stains and rips, please bring them to Mrs Barnard, and someone may like yours. You may also see someone else’s old jacket that you like.
Different members of the Eco Committee are Light Monitors and Litter Prefects.
The light monitors go around at lunch and sometimes after school, making sure unnecessary lights aren’t left on.
Litter Monitors
The litter prefects tend to be the people who use litter pickers. If they see someone litter, they must tell a member of staff and the student that has littered will receive a detention.
We do these things to make our school a more eco-friendly environment.
Thank you for all the work you do, Eco Committee.
Some members of the Eco Committee will also be hosting an assembly to the whole school soon.
