Annual Haute Vallee Book Day
Book Day is celebrated every year at our school, it is a time where we do exciting things that students love which celebrates knowledge of books, celebrates famous authors, and encourages students to read more.
During the week, we engaged in many planned activities, and I will go through some activities that we did!
Teachers dressed up as characters from books!
In the school, all staff dressed up as characters from a particular book and the school ran a competition on which Department had the best array of characters from their chosen books.
This year, the Horizon members dressed up as book characters from the book ‘The Hundred and one Dalmatians’ by the English author Dodie Smith which was also made into a Disney animation. Most of the Horizon staff dressed up as the dalmatian dogs and Miss Bowman dressed up as Cruella De Vil. So, I guess a lot of teachers like 101 Dalmatians book!
Door Designs
Each form class had one challenge, to make a nice and appealing door design of their chosen book. Every form class got involved in this activity during form time and each form was passionate to win the best door competition.
You may ask what was the prize? A box of sweets, all students’ dream prize!
Each class produced a fantastic door design and worked well as a team to recreate the book. Eventually in the end, our class won with a door design of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, Mrs Barnard’s class were the overall winners. We then treated ourselves with sweets!
Scavenger Hunt
We had an exciting Scavenger Hunt. This is how it worked: you would find posters on the walls outside of teachers’ classrooms which displayed pictures of them and their favourite books, you would then find the teachers and write down their favourite book on the provided sheets.
Once you had finished it, you handed it in and then got a prize! It was fun to find out what teachers enjoy reading and it was a lot of fun.
The week of activities encouraged us to read more and find a book that we will enjoy reading.
