Insight into the World of Work

Year 9 Business Students Gain First-Hand Insight into the World of Work

On 4 February, 12 Year 9 Business Studies students took part in the first session of an exciting business engagement programme, giving them a valuable insight into how a large organisation operates behind the scenes.

During the session, students visited the support offices of Channel Islands Co-operative Society, where they met professionals from a wide range of business functions. Teams including Human Resources, Risk and Compliance, Sustainability, Procurement, Pharmacy, and Funeral Services shared their roles and responsibilities, helping students understand how different departments work together to support customers and communities.

Students explored the concept of the Co-operative as a member-owned business, learning how customers can become members and shareholders, have a voice in decision-making, and contribute to long-term community value. This helped students link classroom learning to real-world business structures such as ownership, the importance of customer needs; how technology impacts business, and stakeholder involvement.

The session was highly interactive. Students took part in product taste testing, gaining insight into procurement decisions, branding, and customer preferences. In the pharmacy workshop, students worked hands-on to create mock blister packs using sweets, learning about accuracy, safety, regulation, and the importance of compliance in healthcare settings.

Students also learned about career pathways across different business areas, including HR, pharmacy, compliance, sustainability, and funeral services. Staff shared the skills, qualifications, and personal qualities needed for these roles, highlighting how subjects such as Business Studies, ICT, communication skills, and problem-solving are used in the workplace.

This first session provided students with a strong foundation for understanding how businesses operate beyond the shop floor and how varied and meaningful careers within one organisation can be. Students demonstrated excellent engagement, curiosity, and professionalism throughout the visit.

The programme will continue with further sessions later in the year, including store-based learning, supplier visits, and a final presentation opportunity, allowing students to build on their knowledge and reflect on their learning journey.
